The Cardinals and Indians will square off Monday in an interleague showdown in St. Louis. The game starts at 5:15 EDT.
The Indians are doing it again. If you remember last year, they took baseball by storm by racking up 22 straight victories. Though they aren’t quite there yet, the Tribe have put up seven straight to open up an eight game lead over second place Detroit.
Mike Clevinger (6-0, 3.00 ERA) will take the hill for Cleveland. He’s 2-0 in his last three starts with a 1.69 ERA.
If you’re not familiar with Clevinger’s stuff, here’s a great article by Ian York.
Hosting the red hot Cleveland ball club is the Cardinals. St. Louis has recently made up some ground in the National League Central Division and trail the first place Brewers by 4.5 games. They hovering within striking distance of the wild card lead at 2.0 games back.
On the mound for St. Louis is John Gant (1-2, 4.39 ERA). Gant’s start is a spot start in the place of injured Michael Wacha (oblique). He could pitch himself into a larger starting role with success, but the Cardinals do have other options and Gant needs to pitch effectively to extend his stay as a starter.
