On July 18th:
1927: Ty Cobb doubled for his 4,000th hit. He, of course, is only one of two men to ever reach the 4,000 threshold along with Pete Rose. Cobb got the hit off of Sam Gibson of the Tigers, his former teammate. Cobb had played for the Tigers for the previous 22 seasons, but now played for the Philadelphia Athletics.
1970: The great Willie Mays collected his 3,000th career hit. The milestone came at the expense of pitcher Mike Wegener of the Montreal Expos.
1987: Don Mattingly ties Dale Long’s record of hitting a homer in eight consecutive games. Long’s record had held up for 31 years. Mattingly would not homer the next night. Both men would be joined in 1993 by The Kid, Ken Griffey Jr., who also saw his streak halted at 8.
